Wiki 5A
Posted on: Oct. 16 2008, 8:19

two full years ago, my fifth graders were introduced to an online encyclopedia - wiki 5a.  At the time, it wasn't much of an encyclopedia... it was empty!  There were no articles written... it was brand new.

a jump to now and a quick inspection of the wiki will show we are very close to hitting 1,000 articles!  i wouldn't be surprised if we hit this milestone in the next day or two.  in my mind, this is amazing.  it's great to see what can happen when technology doesn't get in the way!

i do want to put a spotlight on two students and their products.  one would be the homework page.  each day, our homework editor logs in and updates the homework page.  to find the homework page, just click the homework link at the top of the right-hand column on the main page.

one other product i'd like to spotlight is the fast fact feature.  each morning, our fast fact editor logs in, chooses an interesting fact from a random article, then updates the front page of the wiki with that fact.

Both of these editors have been extremely reliable and responsible in getting their jobs done.  Good work editors!

Our chief editor, who earned the position last year, is now in seventh grade and yet still is making great improvements and additions to our wiki.  remember, a wiki is a collection of articles that are group-edited - that means students of all ages can work on them.  our current and former fifth graders have really caught on and are doing a great job.

Beginning to Blog
Posted on: Sep. 18 2008, 1:19

we're starting a new experiment in the computer lab - blogging.  for those who don't know what a blog is - it's short for a web log.  originally, people used them as a sort of online journal or diary.  soon though, people realized it would be a great way to share knowledge on issues or subjects important to them.  blogs of all kinds of sprung up across the Internet - covering anything from politics to food, photography to education, and any other hobby or passion you can think of.  if you like it, it's probably being blogged about.

we are starting out own blog here - but we'll be starting slowly.  go ahead and check it out to see what it's all about:  millerb.edublogs.org.
