Adlai Stevenson is famous for being a grandson of the former vice president, Adlai E. Stevenson. In 1935, he took a position as special attorney and assistant to Jerome Frank, the general counsel of the Agricultural Adjustment Administration. He was elected governor of Illinois in 1948.He was born in Los Angeles on Feb. 5, 1900. He grew up in Bloomington, Illinois. He accidentally shot and killed a playmate. He received a diploma from University High School in Normal, Illinois. He was enlisted in Navy and served as a Seaman Apprentice. He ran for president in 1952 and 1956 and lost both times. He was appointed U. S. ambassador to the United Nations. In 1928 he married Ellen Borden; they had three children. The names of his three children are Adlai Stevenson III, Borden, and John Fell. Stevenson dated various women during the rest of his life, including the Washington Post publisher, Katharine Graham, and he was romantically involved with Marietta Tree, who was then wife of multimillionaire, Ronald Tree. Stevenson, however, never remarried. In 1949, Governor Stevenson appeared as a character witness in the first trial of Alger Hiss. He wrote books on politics. We will always remember him because he was elected governor of Illinois. He later died on July 14, 1965, because of heart failure.
