Afghanistan is located in approximately in the center of Asia. Afghanistan is bordered by Pakistan in the south and east. Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan are located in the north, and China is in the far northeast. Iran is to the west. Afghanistan is a culturally mixed nation. The Capital and also the largest city is Kabul. The president of Afghanistan is Hamid Karzai and the vice president is Ahmad Zia Massoud. The area of Afghanistan is 251,772 sq mi. Afghanistan is on the continent of Asia. Afghanistan is a landlocked and mountainous country with plains in the north and southwest. The highest point of Afghanistan is Nowshak, at 24,557 ft high. Large parts of this country are dry, and fresh water is limited. Afghanistan has a climate with cold winters and hot summers. The country has minor earthquakes. Afghanistan is slightly smaller than the U.S. state of Texas. The country's natural resources include: silver, gold, copper, zinc, iron ore, emerald, apis, azure petroleum, natural gas, uranium, coal, chromite, barites, talc, sulfur, salt, and lead.
People
There are seven Ethnic groups in Afghanistan counting other. The most common Ethnic groups is Pashtun at 42%. Other Ethnic groups are Tajik: 27%, Hazara: 9%, Uzbek: 9%, Aimak: 4%, Turkmen: 3%, Baloch: 2%, and Other: 4%. There are many languages in Afghanistan. The most commonly spoken languages is Dari. 50% of the people speak Dari. Other languages spoken are Pashto: 35%, Uzbek: 8%, Balochi: 4%, Turkmen: 3%, and 2% other (Nuristani, Pashai, Brahui, etc.) Afghanistan has mainly one religion: Muslims 99%. 74-80% are Sunni and 19-25% are Shi'a Muslims. There is however a few Jewish people in Afghanistan.
