Do you think a spider is an insect? Well it's not. A spider is a very different kind of animal from an insect. Spiders belong to a group of animals called arachnids. Arachnids have eight legs, while insects have only six. The body of an arachnid is divided into two equal parts instead of three. And no arachnids have wings or feelers. Like insects arachnids have hard skin. This hard skin may cover the body or part of it. For example, a spider's legs and front part are covered with an arm like skin. But it's back part is usually rather soft. There are more than 40,000 kinds of spiders. And there are more than 80,000 other kinds of arachnids. Among the best known of the other arachnids are scorpions and daddy long legs.
