The area of Australia is 2,988,888 sq mi. Australia is surrounded by the Pacific and Indian oceans. Australia is separated from Asia by the Timor and Arafura seas. Australia has 21,262 mi of coastline which excluding all offshore islands. The Great Barrier Reef, which is the world's largest coral reef, lies a short distance off the north-east coast of Australia and extends for over 1,250 miles. By far the largest part of Australia is semi-arid or desert. Australia is the flattest continent. Australia has the oldest and least fertile soils, and is the driest inhabited continent. Only the south-west and south-east corners of the continent have a comfortable climate. Most of Australia's population lives along the temperate south-eastern coastline. The landscapes of the northern part of the country has a tropical climate, consist of rainforest, grassland, woodland, desert, and mangrove swamps. Australia is located on the Oceania. Australia slightly smaller than the US contiguous 48 states. The terrain of Australia includes mostly low plateaus with deserts and fertile plains in southeast. The natural resources of Australia are bauxite, coal, copper iron ore, tin, gold, nickel, silver, uranium, tungsten, mineral sands, lead, diamonds, natural gas, zinc, and petroleum. Australia is the world's smallest continent but the sixth-largest country.
