Austria is a landlocked country in Europe. It borders both the Czech Republic and Germany are to the north, Slovakia and Hungary are to the east, Slovenia and Italy are to the south, and Switzerland and Liechtenstein are to the west. The capital and largest of Austria is Vienna which is on the Danube River. The president of Austria is Heinz Fischer and the chancellor is Alfred Gusenbauer. The Per capita of Austria is $36,000.

Geography

The total area of Austria is 32,383 sq mi. Austria is largely a mountainous country due to its location in the Alps Mountains. The Northern Limestone Alps, Central Eastern Alps, and Southern Limestone Alps are all partly in Austria. Of the total area of Austria only about a quarter can be considered a low lying country. Only 32% of the country is below 1,640 ft. The high mountainous Alps in the west of Austria is flatten somewhat into plains and low lands in the east of the country. Austria can be divided into five areas. The biggest area of Austria is the Austrian Alps, which consists 62% of Austria's total area. The second greatest mountain area (much lower than the Alps) is situated in the north. Also, known as the Austrian granite plateau, it is located in the central area of the Bohemian Mass and it accounts for 10% of Austria. The Austrian portion of the Vienna basin comprises 4%. Austria is slightly smaller than Maine. The climate for Austria is continental, cloudy; temperate; cold winters with frequent rain and some snow in lowlands and snow in mountains; and moderate summers with occasional showers. The terrain in the south and west is mostly mountains (Alps) and along the northern and eastern margins mostly flat or gently sloping. The natural resources of Austria are oil, coal, lignite, timber, iron ore, copper, antimony, magnetite, zinc, tungsten, graphite, salt, and hydropower.

People

The languages spoken in Austria are German (official nationwide) at 88.6%, Turkish at 2.3%, Serbian at 2.2%, Croatian (official in Burgenland) at 1.6%, other (which includes Slovene, official in Carinthia, and Hungarian, official in Burgenland) at 5.3%. The literacy rate for both females and males is 99%.
