Benjamin Harrison was born August, 20, 1833, on his grandfather’s farm in North Bean, Ohio. Harrison increased his income by earning $2.50 a day as court crier proclaiming the orders of the court.

Harrison ran successfully for city attorney of Indianapolis in 1857. He became secretary of the Republican state central committee in 1858, and was elected reporter of the state supreme court in 1860. He was rejected twice. In 1862, Governor Oliver P. Morton asked Harrison to recruit and command the 70th Regiment of Indiana’s Volunteers in the Civil War.

After he was married to Caroline Lavinia Scott Harrison in 1853, Harrison moved to Indianapolis with his bride and a total of $8.00. Relatives and neighbors who had known his grandfather made them feel at home. In Indianapolis, he practiced law and campaigned for the Republican Party. In the presidential election, he received 100 fewer popular votes than Grover Cleveland, but carried the Electoral College to 233 to 168.

Harrison returned to Indianapolis a War Hero, but the military was not what he wanted to do with his life. He was only 5 feet, 6 inches tall and he was called Little Ben. His grandfather was called Tippecanoe and he wore a hat. He was the grandson of President William Henry Harrison.

Benjamin Harrison died on March 13, 1901, in Indianapolis, Indiana.
