Duke Kahanamoku is famous for being a swimmer and a surfer. He was the first person to be in introduced into both the surfing and swimming hall of fame. Duke also breaks the world record in 1912 for the 200 meter freestyle in his trial heat for the 4 x 200 relay.

He was born on August 24, 1890. Duke was also named after his father, Halapu Kahanamoku, who was a christened Duke by Bernice Pauahi Bishop in honor of Prince Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh. He also spent his youth as a bronzed beach boy. His nickname is "The Big Kahuna".

Duke developed his swimming and surfing skills at Waikiki Beach. Duke also preferred old school traditional surf board which called papa nui, and he was timed at 55.4 seconds in the 100 yard (9lm) freestyle. After breaking the world record in 1911, news of his success got out to American Athletic Union Officials in New York. He easily qualified for the U.S. Olympic’s team in 1912, breaking the world record for the 200 meter freestyle in his trial heat for the 4 x 200 relay.

Duke Kahanamoku was a surfer and a swimmer in Hawaii. He had the best career ever. Then died on January 22, 1968 at the age of 77. He was buried at sea so, he was in ashes.
