Dwight David Eisenhower was the thirty- forth president of the United States from 19531961. He was a military commander of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization from 1951-1952. Observers agree that he was one of the most loved heroes of his time.

Eisenhower was born in Denison, Texas on October 14, 1890. A few years later his family moved to Abilene, Kansas. Dwight had 6 brothers; but one brother died. When Dwight was in grade school he was very athletic. Dwight graduated from Abilene High School in 1909. He then went to the United States Military Academy at West Point. He graduated second lieutenant in 1915. He married Mamie Geneva Doud on July 1, 1916. Eisenhower spent his first 50 years in almost total obscurity. He wanted to go on an overseas combat assignment but instead became a first-rate organizer and trainer of men. He was also recognized as an excellent staff officer and writer. At the beginning of World War II, he returned to duty. He was primarily a planner and public relations figure during the war. He was regarded as a tough, decisive military leader. In 1953 he won the run for the president. Dwight liked to refer to himself as a middle-of-the-roader. He had hopes of balancing the budget, holding down inflation. He enforced school desegregation in Little Rock, Arkansas in 1957. He was the oldest man to hold the office of president. In 1955 he suffered from a major attack. He supported Vice-President Nixon for the Republican Party in 1960. He later retired to his in 1961 to his farm Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. Dwight wrote several books after he retired and then later died on March 28, 1969.
