Franklin Pierce

Franklin Pierce was the 14th president. Pierce fought in the Mexican War. He was such a good president that he has many places named after him.Franklin Pierce was born in Hillsborough, New Hampshire, on November 23, 1804. He was one out of 8 children. His father had served in The American Revolutionary War. He had a happy childhood.
Pierce was elected president in 1852. But, his years in congress were not happy. Why? Because all three of his sons died. And he was president between when the North and South were being bitter. That started the Civil War.
Being president was a hard job and his wife was always sick. And all his sons died. But not long before his term was over because his wife got him to stop being president. He died from cirrhoses of the liver on October 8, 1869.
One thing interesting about him is that when he was 11 his father sent him to an academy. He soon became homesick and returned home on foot. Then his father put him into a wagon, drove him half way, and made him walk the rest of the way!
