You can not judge tornadoes by looking at the tornado but by using the fujita scale. The fujita scale was invented by Tetsuya "Ted" Fujita in 1971. The Enhanced Fujita Scale was introduced on February 1, 2007.

This is the fujita scale:

  • EF0
  • EF1
  • EF2
  • EF3
  • EF4
  • EF5
  • A EF0 tornado does the least amount of damage. Light damage. Some damage to chimneys; shallow-rooted trees pushed completely over; branches broken off some trees; sign boards damaged.
  • A EF1 tornado the wind speeds range around 73-112 mhp. The damage is moderate. Trees broken and fallen; house trailers tipped over; roofing shingles peeled off roofs and large road signs blown to the ground.
  • A EF2 tornado has winds around 113 to 157. Damage is considerable. Roofs can be torn from frames of weaker houses; Barns and other out door builds are ripped down; cars can be blown off the highway; Danger of flying debris
  • A EF3 tornado can have winds in this ballpark 158-206 mph. This damage is severe. Flying debris are everywhere; Walls of houses are blown to the ground: houses get moved off their firm foundation; windows of skyscrapers are broken; cars are lifted up off the ground; closets may give shelter.
  • A EF4 is pretty bad winds are around 207-260. Damage is devastating. Less than 25 of these tornadoes happen every year. Whole houses are leveled; cars are blown very far; skyscrapers get twisted; the debris are so bad that wood gets driven into metal; little shelter above ground
  • A EF5 is the worst tornado. Luckily only one or two happen a year but on April 3 of 1974 six EF5 tornadoes happen. Winds are around 261-318. Damage is so bad that it is classified as incredible. House are just debris all that is left is the foundation; cars and trucks are moved a half a mile; steel structures are almost destroyed. Tornadoes are very dangerous storms we need the fujita scale.
