Geronimo
From Wiki 5A
Geronimo was an Apache tribe leader. He did many dangerous things during the battles he was in. Geronimo was born in June 16, 1829, in what is now New Mexico. He grew up among the Nedais a southern band of Chiricahua, in the Mexican City of Chihuahua. Geronimo had five wives and ten children. He was a warrior of the Chirichua Apaches. Geronimo means One Who Yawns.About 1877, the U.S. government rounded up the Apaches whom Geronimo had joined and moved them to the San Carlos a reservation in Arizona. This reaction resulted from increasing conflicts between the Indians and the white men.
The Apaches became known as savage fighters. Geronimo escaped from the reservation and then fought the U.S. troops in the South West and Chihuahua. He then was returned to the reservation in 1880. In 1882, Geronimo and other Apaches went to Sierra Madre Mountains in Mexico. He and his followers made hidden camps from which they made many other bloody raids. General George Crook led the U.S. forces into attacks in the Apaches camps.
In 1883, he and his followers surrendered. They then moved to the White Mountain Reservation in 1884. Geronimo and some of his followers escaped again in 1885, but they surrendered the next year, 1886. The government moved Geronimo to Fort Sill in Oklahoma in 1894. He lived there for the rest of his life. He caught pneumonia and died in February 17, 1909. That was the end of the great legend of Geronimo.
