Jim Thorpe was a football, basketball player, and a gold medallist. He has a gold medal from the Olympics.
Jim Thorpe was born on May 28, 1888, in Oklahoma. He attended school at Sac and Fox Indian Agency School. He was a twin. His brother's name is Charlie. Charlie died of pneumonia when Jim was eight. Jim did not take Charlie’s death very well. Two years later he ran away.
He went to college at Carlisle Indian Industrial School. At Carlisle, he participated in football, baseball, lacrosse, and even in ballroom dancing. In football he scored over 97 touchdowns.
He won gold medals in the pentathlon and decathlon. He played in the Major League baseball and basketball. In the major league, he played for the New York Giants. He played two seasons in the major league. The United States Postal Service recognized Thorpe’s achievement with a postage stamp. His two gold medals where stolen and they are still missing. He had four children; one died at the age of two. Jim died on March 28, 1958, because of a heart attack while eating super with his third wife. Two of his children were given copies of the medals in memory of their father.
