Early Life and Education

John McCain was born on August 29, 1936, in Panama Canal Zone. He was born in Panama because is father was serving are country as a US Navy Admiral. So John McCain is still an American born citizen. John McCain was raised Episcopalian but he is now a Southern Baptist congregant. John McCain has been in about twenty different schools because his family moved a lot being that his dad was a US Navy Admiral. In 1951, McCain’s family finally settled in Northern Virginia where he attended school at Episcopal High School. The Episcopal High School is a private boarding school. John McCain did every well at wrestling. He graduated from the Episcopal High School in 1954. John McCain went to the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, as did his father and grandfather. Even though McCain had a high IQ he ranked 894 out 899 students at the Naval Academy. He received his diploma from the United States Naval Academy in 1958.

Marriage and Children

John McCain has had seven kids. Three of them have been adopted, Douglas, Andrew, and Bridget. He had the first two adopted children plus Sidney with his first wife, Carol (Shepp) McCain. He married Carol on July 3, 1965. He and his first wife were divorced on April 1980. He adopted Bridget and had three kids, Meghan Marguerite, John Sidney IV “Jack”, and James “Jimmy” with his second wife Cindy (Hensley) McCain. He married Cindy on May 17, 1980]].

Serving our Country

John McCain served are country in the US Navy. As a lieutenant commander, McCain was almost killed while aboard the Forrestal on July 29, 1967. He was injured in the legs and chest. While stationed in Vietnam, he was flying his A-4E Skyhawk on October 26, 1967, he was shot down into the Truc Bach Lake. He fractured both arms and a leg and almost drowned in the lake but some Northern Vietnamese pulled him out. When drug to the shore the some Northern Vietnamese crushed his shoulder with a rifle. Even though he was injured badly he didn’t get medical treatment and was beaten by his captures. John McCain was not given medical care until the Northern Vietnamese found out that his dad was an Admiral. When the Northern Vietnamese offered early release from prison he turned it down because they wouldn’t let any of the other prisoners of war (POW) out that was captured before him. John McCain served was a POW for five and a half years. Injuries form being a POW are evident, like he can’t raise his arms above his head.

In 1976, McCain became navy's liaison to the senate. In 1982, John McCain ran for Arizona’s 1st distract congressman and won. He won reelections in 1984. John McCain ran for Senate in 1987. He defeated Richard Kimball to start his first term as Arizona’s Senator. Since then John McCain has served three more terms. McCain has been known to be a maverick in the senate. John McCain has been on president, George H. W. Bush’s and Republican Bob Dole’s short list. McCain ran for president in 2000. He is again running for president in 2008. On August 29, 2008, McCain announced his pick for vice president, Sarah Palin. Some polls have John McCain one percentage point ahead of Barack Obama.

John McCain’s Views

John McCain thinks that students should do their best, but people who struggle should be tutored. John McCain says we should strengthen the enforcement of the Clean Air Act and the Clean Water Act. John McCain doesn't support UN Treaty regarding global climate change. He supports investing in ethanol because of high gas prices. He thinks we should control terror by increasing military capabilities such as missile defense systems. One big thing John McCain is against is Pork barrel spending. John McCain is also against abortion.
